This article compares the horsepower ratings of ten different pickup trucks. Strictly for purposes of full disclosure, on a scale of 1-10 the Cadillac Escalade EXT ($63,060-$69,640) rates second with 411 hp. That having been said, the primary focus of this piece will be on rating trucks that are closer (for the most part) to being within the budgetary reach of the average consumer.
Rated number one for horsepower is the Ford F-150 SVT (Special Vehicle Team) Raptor. Backed-up by a 6 speed automatic tranny with overdrive Ford’s Triton 6.2L V-8 generates 411 horsepower. At the low-end the Raptor costs $23,955 while the top of the line model is priced at $53,185. Outfitted with a 6.7 L intercooled Turbo Powerstroke V-8 and 6 speed automatic transmission with overdrive the 400 hp produced by the Ford F-450 ($50,445 to $61,330) places the F-450 in fourth in the rankings. Sixth on the list and costing between $29,920 and $47,405 is the Ford F-250. Powered by a 6.2-liter V-8 the F-250 offers 385 hp.
The 403 horsepower that is created when a 6.2L V-8 engine is coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission with overdrive places the GMC Sierra 1500 Denali third in the rankings. The Denali costs a minimum of $28,115 and a maximum of $43,910.
Dodge offers 3 models that placed 5th, 7th and 8th respectively. Ranging from $24,200 to $49,030 the RAM 1500 R/T with Dodge’s 5.7L V-8 Hemi under the hood is rated for 395 horsepower. The 5.7L Hemi that comes standard in the Dodge RAM 2500 Tradesman ($29,420-$52,675) and RAM 3500 ST ($30,105 to $53,990) produces 383 horsepower in both trucks. Dodge’s horsepower ratings were achieved when the engine was linked to a six-speed automatic tranny with overdrive.
Propelled by a i-FORCE 5.7L V-8/ 6 speed automatic with overdrive the 9th ranked Toyota Tundra Grade delivers 381 ponies. The Toyota’s base sticker price is $25,455 and fully loaded costs $48,170. The Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LT comes in 10th with 360 horses. The Chevy features a Vortec 6.0L V-8 mated with (you guessed it) a 6 speed auto with overdrive.
