Before the aluminum reaches our shop, it goes through a high-pressure extrusion process. This process can create natural cosmetic variations, including:
- Dull or shiny streaks – These are normal variations in the grain structure of raw aluminum. They do not affect strength, durability, or performance, but they can make the surface appear uneven or patchy under certain lighting conditions.
- Light tooling marks or subtle waves – These marks come from the extrusion dies and handling at the mill. They are cosmetic only and are common on mill-finish aluminum products.
Because the aluminum is not painted or powder coated, these natural characteristics remain visible instead of being covered by a finish.
About Mill Finish Aluminum and the Black Discoloration Around Welds
When raw aluminum is welded, the heat from the welding process reacts with the natural oxide layer on the metal. This creates a dark gray or black soot-like discoloration around the weld area. While we clean the material with WD-40, some dark remnants may remain visible.
- This is not dirt, corrosion, or a defect.
- It is a normal byproduct of welding bare aluminum.
