Getting stuck is a natural part of four wheeling, and to some, a fun and challenging experience that is almost as fun as off-roading itself. You have to make sure that you are well armed with the proper gear to help get out of any jam. It is bound to happen at one point or another and it is better to be safe than to be sorry. Here are five recovery gear items that all off-road adventurers should have on hand.
Snatch Blocks
Snatch blocks are used to increase the pulling power of winches. It can also allow the cables to change direction if the winching vehicle has no way to line up directly in front of the stuck vehicle. A snatch block opens like scissors to allow the cables to be inserted.
Winches
Winches are an invaluable tool when it comes to off-roading. Winches provide a person with the ability to self extract a vehicle. There are a variety of winches out there to choose from, and one of the most important things to consider when picking out a winch is it weight rating, a good rule of thumb is to pick a winch rated at 1.5 times the weight of your vehicle.
A Shovel
Sometimes the best way out is to dig a little deeper. Keep a small shovel to help dig out your tires and find stable traction.
Leather Gloves
Protect your hands with a good pair of leather gloves. Wearing a good pair of gloves can help protect you from anything that might strip or cut your hands.
Full Recovery Kit
Recovery kits are an essential accessory for all off road excursions. A recovery kit will usually come with all the basic four wheel recovery needs and usually includes tree protector straps, tow straps, snatch straps, gloves, D-rings, bow snatch, and a carrying case.
Whether you are a new-be to the scene or a seasoned off-roader, everyone should carry recovery gear. Recovery gear will not only be the best investment you make but is usually required for all off road runs. So make sure that you are ready when the time comes to get yourself out of the mud.
